New York / New Amsterdam
Originally named New Amsterdam, New York was one of the original 13 colonies of the United States. First settled by the Dutch, it was the perfect place for a colony with fertile soil and land. People of New Amsterdam were very successful through trade and interaction with Native Americans and English colonies. The English King however did not like the Dutch being so successful with this great piece of land so they decided to take control of it. The Dutch gave up without a fight and accepted their new leader. The name was then changed to New York in honor of the Duke of York.
